Simon Akkerman found guilty of eight charges of indecent dealing with a child under 14. Akkerman was sentenced to seven years in jail with a non-parole period of five years on Friday.  He cried uncontrollably in court as the judge handed down his sentence, according to the West Australian.

Simon Akkerman Case against child abuse

The cinematographer was charged with crimes against one of the boys in 2017.

He said he knew one of the boys but has vehemently denied all charges against him for both accusers.In court on Friday he continued to deny the offences after being found guilty in October.  He said his mental health had deteriorated in recent months and the court had been told he was also a victim of abuse.

Judge John Prior said Akkerman’s offending was not a one-off.

‘You treated the victims as your sexual objects for the purpose of your own sexual gratification,’ Judge Prior said.’ There was, in my view, significant grooming activity… by you to the extent that the sexual activity between you and the two victims became normalized.’

One of his victims said outside of court he hoped other abuse victims would speak out because of the case.  Akkerman worked as a camera operator on Kidman’s Windrider and as a director of photography on Crowe’s Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.
